Alaska Option Selects S1’s Payments Solution
Legacy replacement at a leading USA switch
Alaska Option, one of the leading master debit switches in the USA, has licensed an S1 Payments solution for its EFT switch and processing platform. Alaska Option selected the open-systems architecture from S1 to replace its current system, which has been in place since 1998.
"After an extensive evaluation process, we selected the S1 Payments platform because it demonstrated that it could satisfy our requirements for reliability and scalability, provide cost savings and most importantly, allow Alaska Option to quickly and effectively roll out new services to our customers," said John Shipe, Alaska Option President.
S1's Payments solutions for ATM driving, retail point-of-sale, card management, and merchant acquiring are used by more than 300 customers in over 50 countries. With the latest success at Alaska Option, S1 will be replacing another legacy payments system with the flexible, open-systems architecture of its solutions.
"We are very excited to be working with Alaska Option," said Johann Dreyer, S1 Corporation CEO. "After carefully reviewing the competition, Alaska Option's decision to select our solution reinforces our proven market position as a leader in open-systems platforms for financial services. The Alaska Option relationship represents continued momentum for S1 in replacing legacy payments systems around the world."

Retailers Seek Easier PCI DSS Compliance Options
A hot topic for retailers at the moment is how to reduce the pain, time, and cost associated with becoming PCI DSS compliant, and remaining so. Two new technologies are emerging that may be able to help: tokenization of card numbers and encryption of card data at the point of origination.
S1 recently held a webinar on these innovations, with expert speakers from Visa Europe and Mercator Advisory Group sharing their thoughts and offering advice. To listen to the recording and view the presentations, which include S1’s own recommendations, follow this link.
Another source of impartial advice on tokenization and end-to-end encryption is Mercator’s latest research report, authored by their respected analyst, George Peabody. Download a free copy of this report with our compliments.

Time Travel: The Changing Payments Landscape
Solution providers are moving away from proprietary systems to open-systems environments, driven by the demand for payments systems that provide a lower total cost per transaction. The expense of maintaining proprietary operating systems cannot be easily justified when open systems, which provide high availability in mission-critical environments, are already being used by leading institutions worldwide. Ten years ago, those in the market for payments solutions could chose from several global players offering applications that ran on a variety of platforms including:
- ACI Worldwide: HP
- Connex (Deluxe): HP Non-Stop
- Oasis: Unix
- S2 Systems: Stratus VOS
- Arksys: IBM iSeries (AS400)
- Mosaic Software: Microsoft and IBM AIX (Unix)
Today, there are two global providers of payments systems solutions: ACI Worldwide and S1.
In addition to consolidation, other forces have affected the payments solution landscape. With the sunset of Base24, an industry-wide conversion from proprietary environments to open systems is reaching completion. S1, with its Mosaic/Postilion software, preceded its competitors into the open-systems space over ten years ago. A decade of lessons learned in serving the needs of some of the world’s largest institutions means S1 understands the challenges faced by payments solutions providers in making the move to open-systems environments.
Today, S1 has more than 300 installations of its open-systems payments solutions. Market research conducted by S1 estimates that more than 80% of all open-systems payments installations worldwide are based on S1’s software. S1 drives more than 90% of all ATMs supported by open-systems payments solutions. S1 has large production systems running in leading organizations that have not experienced downtime on their S1 systems for years. |
